描述.This book summarizes the latest research on cognitive network-layer methods and smart adaptive physical-layer methods in underwater networks. Underwater communication requires extendable and delay-tolerant underwater acoustic networks capable of supporting multiple frequency bands, data rates and transmission ranges. The book also discusses a suitable foreground communication stack for mixed mobile/static networks, a technology that requires adaptive physical layer waveforms and cognitive network strategies with underlying cooperative and non-cooperative robust processes. The goal is to arrive at a universally applicable standard in the area of Underwater Internet-of-Things [ISO/IEC 30140, 30142, 30143]. .The book is the second spin-off of the research project RACUN, after the first RACUN-book "Underwater Acoustic Networking Techniques" (https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007%2F978-3-642-25224-2).

https://doi.org/10.1007/BFb0109634s a whole and aims at giving a basic insight into cognitive underwater communication. Trough a classification the different cognitive strategies will be divided into groups and the fundamental differences between nodes and network knowledge will be presented.

Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networking,y-Forward paradigm is described and its suitability to underwater acoustic networks is briefly assessed. Furthermore, the possible application of DTN to data muling AUVs (Autonomous Underwater vehicles) is discussed.

Autonomous Ad Hoc Networks,l contact procedures proposed by CMRE for the NATO standard JANUS. Furthermore, an alternative method for exchanging the capabilities of single nodes is discussed. Finally, different proposals for address assignment procedures are being debated.

Distance Estimation,summarized. Procedures about distance estimation are analyzed and divided into two categories. The first is the own node knowledge (Intra Knowledge, passive information) and the second is the knowledge of other nodes (Inter Knowledge, active information) which has to be exchanged via underwater communication.
