In many circumstances, they provide the only way of deter mining the origins of this material. However, the method has definite limitations which must be taken into account. Inshore/Offshore Water Exchange in Shallow Coastal Systemsially on the coastal shelf, often under the influence of wind and buoyancy induced processes. Following the lines indicated above a qualitative discussion of the most important mixing processes is presented. Conclusions are put forward concerning needs for future research.
