Neuronal coexistence of putative transmitters in the spinal cord and brainstem of the rat,easing hormone (TRH)-like immunoreactivity (Hökfelt ., 1980; Johansson ., 1981). The first part of this chapter describes combined immunocytochemical and biochemical studies which further characterise the coexistence of SP and TRH in bulbospinal serotonergic neurones of the rat.

,Coexistence of adenosine 5′-triphosphate and acetylcholine in the electromotor synapse,cetate. An active transport system of high affinity supplies the nerve terminal with extracellular choline for renewed synthesis and release of ACh. Particularly for neuromuscular transmission these mechanisms would appear to be satisfactory for maintaining physiological levels of activation of the effector system.

The co-transmitter hypothesis, with special reference to the storage and release of ATP with noradrrently not entirely with the agreement of Dale), and defined it as “at all the axonal branches of a neurone, there is liberation of the same transmitter substance or substances”. Ironically, this definition does not exclude the possibility of “co-transmitters”.
