These techniques provide a competitive advantage over purelyhardware or software implementations of time-constrained embeddedsystems. .Recent advances in chip-level synthesis have made it possible tosynthesize application-specific circuits under strict timingconstraints. This work advances the state of the art by formulatingthe problem of system synthesis using both application-specific aswell as reprogrammable components, such as off-the-shelf processors.Timing constraints are used to determine what part of the systemfunctionality must be delegated to dedicated application-specifichardware while the rest is delegated to software that runs on theprocessor. This co-synthesis of hardware and software from behavioralspecifications makes it possible to realize real-time embedded systemsusing off-the-shelf parts and a relatively small amount ofapplication-specific circuitry that can be mapped to semi-custom VLSIsuch as gate arrays.
