描述.This book describes observed features of urban climate and its long-term variations as well as the relationship of climate to heat stroke in Japan, based on observational data and statistical analyses. Consisting of three parts, the book is a valuable resource for researchers and professionals involved with these topics. Part 1 focuses on urban climate. The basic characteristics of heat islands are reviewed, and long-term urban warming is described with a focus on the distinction from global warming. The influence of microscale environmental changes on the observed temperature is also presented, as well as changes in wind and precipitation in urban areas. They deepen our understanding of the features and mechanisms of urban heat islands and their long-term changes. Part 2 describes the climatological features of heat stroke mortality, which has become a major social problem in Japan, using mortality statistics and meteorological data. The spatial and temporal variations of heat stroke mortality are analyzed quantitatively on various spatial and temporal scales. In addition, the number of ambulance transports is examined as another measure of heat stroke casualty. The results provi

Climatology of Heat Stroke Mortality in Japanthe results of analyses on the relationship between heat stroke mortality and temperature based on data from the Vital Statistics of Japan, focusing on regional patterns and temporal variations. The features of the spatial distribution of heat stroke mortality rate differ with age groups, suggesting

Comparison of Climatology of Ambulance Transport Rates and Mortalitye relationship between the number of heat stroke ambulance transports and temperature in Japan. The results are similar to those obtained for mortality (Chap. .) in many respects. For example, the transport rate is higher for prefectures in cooler climates, and is higher in early summer than in late

Climatology of Cold Mortality in Japaner, the analysis used in Chap. . is applied to cold mortality based on data from the Vital Statistics. The cold mortality rate tends to be higher in prefectures with lower average winter temperatures, although the temperature dependence of cold mortality is weaker than that of heat stroke deaths. In

Availability and Homogeneity of Meteorological Data in Japanautomated, and the data are provided in digital formats. In addition, the data before the mid-twentieth century have been partially digitized. However, the data may not be perfectly homogeneous owing to changes in observation sites, instruments, and methods; hence, they should be used with care.
