Plastic Processes at Crack Tipstion breaks down, details of the atomic positions near sharp crack tips are a matter of discussions, still. Correspondingly, a sound physical model for crack advance is available within the scope of continuum elasticity: The elastic energy release rate due to crack growth must be equal to the energy required for forming the new surfaces.

Interatomic Forces and the Simulation of CracksWhat can solid state physics contribute to the understanding of fracture? If we leave aside the field of continuum mechanics, since the Workshop is concerned mainly with the atomistics of fracture, the current theoretical approaches have two extremes.

Descriptions of Hadronic Structure,ng slip on the (1,0,−1) and (0,1,−1) slip planes. They intersect along the [1,1,1] direction on the (1,−1,0) fracture plane. If the crack opening rate, δ, is increased by a factor of two only, the plane (1,−1,0) fracture surface becomes heavily fragmented. The fragments are all (1,0,0) facets which look very much cleavage like.

Siegmund Brandt,Hans Dieter Dahmenare able to provide high stress-concentrations. The cracks may be present . as a consequence of manufacturing processes; they may be nucleated by plastic deformation; or they may be introduced deliberately, e.g. by fatigue, to provide standard precracks in testpieces.
