描述Chaucer s Pardoner and Gender Theory, the first book-length treatment of the character, examines the Pardoner in Chaucer s Canterbury Tales from the perspective of both medieval and twentieth-century theories of sex, gender, and erotic practice. Sturges argues for a discontinuous, fragmentary reading of this character and his tale that is genuinely both premodern and postmodern. Drawing on theorists ranging from St. Augustine and Alain de Lille to Judith Butler and Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Sturges approaches the Pardoner as a representative of the construction of historical - and sexual - identities in a variety of historically specific discourses, and argues that medieval understandings of gender remain sedimented in postmodern discourse.

The Pardoner’s Genders: Linguistic and Otherc reference to three related components of gender identity: the sexed body, socially constructed gender presentation, and erotic practice. While at least some late- twentieth-century readers distinguish among these three components, medieval sources sometimes do not, often assuming instead that what

The Pardoner’s Different Erotic Practicesoup, to use an often-repeated critical formula. At least until quite recently, this moral status has been regularly, though not universally, associated not only with the Pardoner’s unorthodox body, but also with an unorthodox sexuality. The Pardoner’s physical description in the . allows him an effe

The Pardoner Unveiledagainst a vaguely modern urban background; one figure has its (his? her?) hand around the other’s shoulder. The most striking aspect of the drawing is that both heads are heavily veiled in white cloths like pillowcases, whose folds, loosely clinging to their features, both reveal that there are invi

The Dismemberment of the Pardoner), one I touched on only briefly earlier: the fragmented or dismembered body, which is of considerable interest to both the Pardoner and the Prioress. An investigation of this concern might be initiated with Chaucer’s various treatments of the Orpheus myth—the myth that links dismemberment to poetry
