It is therefore in these places that we find the greatest development of one class of plants which struggles for “standing room only” in the photic zone, namely the epiphytes.

Physiological Interactions Between the Partners of the Lichen Symbiosis,h one type of fungus (the mycobiont). When fully integrated they form a new biological entity with no resemblance to either of the components. There are to date about 20,000 lichen species known, which account for about 25% of all the fungi known in the world (lichens are incorporated in fungal classification).

Ortfried Schäffter,Hildegard SchickeThe chapters of this volume deal with intercellular interaction phenomena in plants. Collectively they provide a broad conspectus of a highly active, if greatly fragmented, research field.

Christiane Schiersmann,Heinz-Ulrich ThielCyanobacteria are outstanding among prokaryotes because of their ability to exploit water-bound protons for photosynthesis and to fix molecular nitrogen. Hence they are successful in nearly all types of biotopes and are also frequently observed in close relationship with other organisms.

Christiane Schiersmann,Heinz-Ulrich ThielHigher plants and the cellular slime moulds have in common that they depend mainly on their hormonal system for regulation of growth and development. The hormone or hormone-like substances are in both groups limited to a few compounds, which may bind to cell surface or intracellular receptors.
