描述In symbiosis, different organisms have to recognize each other and exchange material and information. While the functional morphology of symbiont cells has extensively been studied little attention has been paid to mutual interactions and cell-to-cell signals. The main topic of the book is the comparison and discussion of the short-distance signals triggering mutualism in animal and plant cells. Thus it provides a) the basis for a better understanding of various aspects of cell compatibility; b) standardisation of a common vocabulary for animal and plant symbiotic biology; c) optimization of experimental techniques for studying signals in symbiosis. The results show the differences and the general principles in the signalling processes of plant, animal and bacterial cells.

Morphological Integration and Functional Compatibility Between Symbionts in Vesicular Arbuscular Endthe fact that the fungal associates, belonging to four genera in the Endogonales (Trappe, 1982), cannot be grown in pure culture so that, apart from a preliminary study on axenically infected clover (Pons, 1984), most Information comes from electron microscope observations made, on non-axenic associations.

Specificity in the , Symbiosis into the eggs and the association is reestablished at each generation of . when recently-hatched juveniles feed on free-living algae in the interstitial water. The symbiosis appears to be obligate for .; all adult animals are green in the field and, in the laboratory, aposymbiotic juveniles die within a few weeks of hatching.

Direct Planning in Norway: 1948–58lyzes the reduction of molecular dinitrogen from the atmosphere into organic form assimilable by the eukaryotic partner in the association. Management of biological nitrogen fixation by tree species is viewed increasingly as an important approach to improvement of world agriculture and forestry.

Oral History, Community, and Displacementso that the common problems are not dealt with from a similar point of view. This leads to further problems of standardization of termi. ology, for example the definition of “symbiont”, “parasite”, as well as their cell-to-cell relationships in geometrical terms.
