描述.Aging represents a physiological and .per se. non-pathological and multifactorial process involving a set of key genes and mechanisms being triggered by different endogenous and exogenous factors. Since aging is a major risk factor in connection with a variety of human disorders, it is increasingly becoming a central topic in biochemical and medical research. The plethora of theories on aging – some of which have been discussed for decades – are neither isolated nor contradictory but instead can be connected in a network of pathways and processes at the cellular and molecular levels. This book summarizes the most prominent and important approaches, focusing on telomeres, DNA damage and oxidative stress as well as on the possible role of nutrition, the interplay between genes and environment (epigenetics) and intracellular protein homeostasis and introduces some genes that have actually extended life spans in animal models. Linking these different determinants of aging with disease, this volume aims to reveal their multiple interdependencies. We see that there is no single “perfect” theory of aging and that instead it is possible to define what the authors call the .molecular aging

Aging and Cell Aging: An Introduction, rson born today has a high statistical chance to reach the age of 100, to become a centenarian. Since aging is the primary risk factor for many human disorders it is mandatory to understand the aging process and how it affects onset and course of disorders of the elderly. Scientifically the medium l

Cell Cycle: The Life Cycle of a Cell,It describes a series of events leading to cell division and duplication and can be sectioned into phases that are controlled by a collection of proteins interacting with each other, the cyclines and the cycline-dependent kinases. Theories and Mechanisms of Aging,no unifying theory of aging. The individual theories put individual factors and processes in focus and for each theory there are direct links to life span or to age-related disorders. In the following chapter, the key theories of aging focusing on telomeres, DNA damage, oxidative stress as well as p

Selected Age-Related Disorders, igate and understand the link between aging as key risk factor and single syndromes. In some chapters of this book links have been identified between molecular mechanisms of aging and the pathogenesis of human disorders in the elderly. Here, the focus is put on Alzheimers disease (AD) and cancer. Wh
