影响因子In Britain and the Origins of Canadian Confederation (1837-1867), Ged Martin challenges the view that the provinces of British North America united between 1864 and 1867 in response to the internal and external challenges of the time. After a sceptical review of the way in which historians have handled the Confederation issue, he turns to the largely neglected British dimension, arguing that the origins of Confederation must be sought in a vague consensus among opinion-formers in Britain that the provinces would one day unite.

Motives and Expectations of the British, rceptions of the provinces: a few bold outlines, but much fuzziness of detail. Broadly, there were three main reasons why British opinion favoured a union of British North America: better government, preparation for eventual independence, and the creation of a barrier against the United States. The Role of the British in the Launching of Confederation, 1864 and 1867. Yet it may be that the two most important British contributions had been made well before the delegates gathered at Charlottetown. The British had succeeded, first, in setting the agenda by defining the aim of intercolonial union. Secondly, and arguably even more crucially important,

,The Role of the British in the Achievement of Confederation 1864–1867,how the imperial . managed to overcome opposition in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in 1865–6 is not fully explained. A collage of phrases captures the prevailing impression created by most studies of the subject: ‘Britain overrides resistance’ was Brebner’s sub-heading, followed by the statement tha

Conclusion,th American union that the proposed scheme of government was ‘rather wanting in neatness and scientific character’.. Historians should certainly beware of implying neatness and scientific precision in attempting to explain why Confederation occurred in the 1860s. In the end, politicians in Canada, N

Design Technology of Space Station System, North America Act was not passed in an imperial fit of absent-mindedness: the British were active participants in the process of Confederation, not mere onlookers. The main thesis of this study may be reduced to a single statement: between 1837 and 1867, the British came to favour the eventual creation of a union of British North America..

Manned Landing and Recovery Technology, ons about the utility of an intercolonial union. Historians like to define and are expected to provide neat and, above all, logical explanations. Yet Confederation may be better understood through a blurred focus. Imprecision, even outright fuzziness, is an essential part of understanding British notions about their North American provinces.
