Although the mathematician who is not familiar with neurophysiological definitions may not grasp all the basic knowledge in detail on first reading, he can acquire a convenient overview. Chaos in Brain Function Henri Poincaré was the first to investigate the complex behavior of simple mathematical systems. He analyzed topological structures in phase space and discovered that the equation for the motion of planets could display an irregular or chaotic motion (Poincaré 1892). A mathematical basis for this behavior was later given by Birkhoff (1932).
