Current Risks of Blood Transfusione AIDS epidemic dispelled this illusion. Ironically, homologous blood transfusion is safer than ever before, and transfusion-associated AIDS is far from its most significant risk. A sober assessment of the risks of transfusion should help develop improved strategies for managing surgical patients.
