影响因子.Ice and Fire: Great Comets to Come was written because a special celestial event climaxes towards the end of 2013 – the arrival, fresh from the Oort Cloud, of Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON).  By all predictions – even the most pessimistic ones – this comet is set to be one of, perhaps the most, dazzling comet seen in modern history and has the astronomical world buzzing with anticipation..Skywatchers have already been primed for C/2012 (ISON) earlier in 2013 with the apparition of another naked-eye comet, C/2011 L4 (PanSTARRS), and following C/2012 S1 (ISON) there is the prospect of 2012 K1 (PanSTARRS) reaching naked eye visibility in August 2014. Future bright cometary prospects are also discussed, taking into account the latest predictions..Examining the origin and nature of comets using examples of great comets from the past, this book sets the scene for the arrival of Comet C/2012 S1 and those following it over the next few years in the inner Solar System. Skywatchers and amateur astronomers can learn how to follow, observe and record comets. There is also a guide on how to keep abreast of the latest cometary discoveries and how to use a variety of reputable sources, including publica

No fewer than eight Great Comets graced nineteenth-century skies, six of these appearing within the space of just 40 years, bestowing upon many an astronomer an enviable set of indelible memories.

https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-663-05508-2 a wide enough field of view to provide a complete visual view of any comet whose tail stretches more than a hand’s width across the sky (unless you look through your binoculars through the wrong end). Only the naked eye is capable of taking in the more extensive comets so that their scale can be appreciated (Fig. 8.1).

What Are Comets and Asteroids, ust, their trailing tails growing longer night by night and they hang in the sky like the sword of Damocles. They possess an almost conscious intention to hit something—and that something is usually Planet Earth (Fig. 1.1).

From Ancient Atmospherics to Icy Dirtballs, effort to be the most important object in the night skies. As we’ll find out, that grand, jaw-dropping cometary spectacle is largely the result of celestial ‘smoke and mirrors.’ A great comet is one of nature’s most astonishing special effects.

Locating, Tracking, and Recording Comet Sightings,e ignorant generations of viewers with feelings of foreboding, awe and terror. Nowadays we still feel the awe. Regardless of our knowledge, humans (even scientists!) are not immune to nature’s splendors, but our adrenal glands are stimulated by the sheer pleasure of the view, not by superstitious fears.
