影响因子In this innovative study, Patrick Ismond provides an analysis of the issue of racism within British sport. It presents a number of theoretical positions regarding race, racism and sport, before providing a background history of the involvement of minority ethnic communities. Much detailed primary research is used to inform interesting discussions concerning racism in sport and its relationship to ethnicity, identity and notions of Englishness and Britishness. The study also includes a valuable analysis of sexism in sport, and the discrimination suffered by minority ethnic sportswomen.

Sport in the Later Years will finish with a look at how racist ideas and practices are perpetuated in media representations. Ideas about ‘natural ability’ are, as will be shown, linked to such practices as ‘stacking’. Media portrayals of black sports-people have also supported these ideas, through journalism that emphasise

Women and Sportr gender equality has obscured concerns of ‘race’, social class and sexuality. Certain sports have featured prominently as sites of struggle over women’s rights to participate on their own terms. And whilst changing social ideas have led to greater sports access and freedom, women’s sport illustrate

Conclusion. In terms of population, goods and information movements, the world has never been more navigable. But marked public anxiety over the consequences of ‘race’ in shared social contexts has led to a retreat into the particularities of ethnic difference, and the biological assumptions that underlie the
