Localization and Classification of Targets by Echolocating Bats and Dolphins, ccount of neural processing. This chapter attempts to provide an integrated view of findings regarding the principal purpose of wideband biosonar with regard to the localization and classification of targets based on accurate determination of the delay and spectrum of echoes.

0947-2657 contrasts mechanisms, increasing our understanding of bioso. Two groups of animals, bats and odontocetes (toothed whales), have independently developed the ability to orient and detect prey by biosonar (echolocation). This active mechanism of orientation allows these animals to operate under low lig

Chew-Hung Chang,Bing Sheng Wu,Kim Irvinee ear muscle contractions during bat vocalization production protect the auditory system from overstimulation and allow better echo hearing. Whale and dolphin hearing sensation levels also change to maximize the hearing of echoes but may operate differently. A number of mechanisms come into play to maximize hearing during echolocation.

Book 2014s known about biosonar in bats and odontocetes. Chapters are written by bat and odontocetes experts, resulting in collaborations that not only examine data on both animals, but also compare and contrast mechanisms. This book provides a unique insight that will help improve our understanding of biosonar in both animal groups. .

Biosonar of Bats and Toothed Whales: An Overview, unprecedented level of control also in field experiments. Also, the active acoustic orientation of bats and dolphins provide a unique window into adaptive perception processes, making echolocators attractive models for studies of acoustic scene analysis. Bats and whales comprise almost a fourth of
