影响因子.This book presents an overview of the general field of biomimetics - lessons from nature. It presents various examples of biomimetics, including roughness-induced superomniphobic surfaces which provide functionality of commercial interest. The major focus in the book is on lotus effect, rose petal effect, shark skin effect, and gecko adhesion.  For each example, the book first presents characterization of an object to understand how a natural object provides functionality, followed by modeling and then fabrication of structures in the lab using nature’s route to verify one’s understanding of nature and provide guidance for development of optimum structures. Once it is understood how nature does it, examples of fabrication of optimum structures using smart materials and fabrication techniques, are presented. Examples of nature inspired objects are also presented throughout..

Fabrication Techniques Used for Structures with Superhydrophobicity, Self-Cleaning, Low Adhesion/Lowcro- and nanostructure fabrication, such as lithography, etching, deposition, and self-assembly, have been utilized for producing superhydrophobic surfaces (Fig. 5.1; Table 5.1). The pros and cons of these techniques are summarized in Table 5.2. Among especially interesting developments is the creat

Fabrication and Characterization of Micro-, Nano-, and Hierarchical Structured Surfaces upon whether the surface is hydrophilic or hydrophobic. Yost et al. (1995) found that roughness enhances wetting of a copper surface with Sn–Pb eutectic solder, which has a contact angle of . for a smooth surface.

Fabrication and Characterization of Micropatterned Structures Inspired by ,ths (Koch et al., 2009). The ability to retain air prevents wetting and submersion. Specifically, . has been studied because of its complex structured surface. It is an aquatic fern commonly known as giant Salvinia and is native to southeastern Brazil. . is a free-floating plant that does not requir

Characterization of Rose Petals and Fabrication and Characterization of Superhydrophobic Surfaces wiChang et al., 2009; Bhushan and Her, 2010). While a water droplet can easily roll off the surface of a Lotus leaf, it stays pinned to the surface of these leaves. The different behavior of wetting between the Lotus leaf and the rose petal can be explained by different designs in the surface hierarch

Shark skin Surface for Fluid-Drag Reduction in Turbulent Flowuses a reduction in drag as they move through water, protects the fish from abrasion by making the fish slide across objects rather than scrape, and prevents disease by making the surface of the fish difficult for microscopic organisms to adhere to (Shephard, 1994). [Accumulation of unwanted biologi

Gecko Adhesionrfaces and are used for locomotion, even on vertical walls or across the ceiling (Gorb, 2001; Bhushan, 2007). Biological evolution over a long period of time has led to the optimization of their leg attachment systems. This dynamic attachment ability is referred to as reversible adhesion or smart ad
