影响因子New textbooks at all levels of chemistry appear with great regularity. Some fields like basic biochemistry, organic reaction mechanisms, and chemical thermody namics are well represented by many excellent texts, and new or revised editions are published sufficiently often to keep up with progress in research. However, some areas of chemistry, especially many of those taught at the graduate level, suffer from a real lack of up-to-date textbooks. The most serious needs occur in fields that are rapidly changing. Textbooks in these subjects usually have to be written by scientists actually involved in the research which is advancing the field. It is not often easy to persuade such individuals to set time aside to help spread the knowledge they have accumulated. Our goal, in this series, is to pinpoint areas of chemistry where recent progress has outpaced what is covered in any available textbooks, and then seek out and persuade experts in these fields to produce relatively concise but instructive introductions to their fields. These should serve the needs of one semester or one quarter graduate courses in chemistry and biochemistry. In some cases, the availability of texts in active r

Characterization and Structural Principles of Membrane Proteins, ovide the active components of the biomembrane. In this chapter we discuss some of the operational principles which have proved useful in understanding the structure of membrane proteins. Specific examples which have provided paradigms are discussed in this chapter, and further examples of membrane

Lateral and Transverse Asymmetry in Membranes, ments, e.g., cytoplasmic and extracytoplasmic. Therefore, transverse asymmetry, differentiating the two monolayer halves of the bilayer, is sensible. Membrane protein asymmetry is clearly a consequence of the way in which the proteins are originally inserted into the membrane. The rate of protein fl

Membrane Dynamics and Protein-Lipid Interactions,or polynucleotides, and most certainly for membranes. The fluid mosaic model (Chapter 1) has helped focus attention on the mobility of membrane components by conceptualizing the membrane as a sea of lipid in which embedded globular proteins are freely floating. Over the past two decades an enormous

Interactions of Small Molecules with Membranes: Partitioning, Permeability, and Electrical Effects, anelles. In this chapter, we recognize that, in fact, being a barrier to solute flux between aqueous compartments is an essential part of membrane function. The major focus of this chapter is the interaction between the phospholipid bilayer and small solute molecules, both ions and nonelectrolytes.
