Medien • Kultur • Kommunikationny prostigmatid mites in deserts also have this kind of life cycle. The same may hold for some Collembola as well, although the recent discovery of an anhydrobiotic type of response to dehydration in this group (Poinsot-Balaguer, 1976) may imply longer-than-expected life spans in desert forms.

Kommunikativer Konstruktivismusn die, leaving only their seeds and their withered remains. But there are also many other ephemerals in the desert; they consist of deciduous perennial plants like many grasses and members of the Lilliaceae. Bulbs, rhizomes, and underground stems characterize deciduous perennials, which are also called “geophytes.”

The Array of Desert Invertebratese treatments are deferred until later chapters, which stress available information regardless of the distribution or size of a particular invertebrate group. Unfortunately, there is really little alternative to such an approach if a synthesis of current knowledge is to be presented. Hence “equal treatment” occurs only in this chapter.
