https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-658-15926-9have yet to be characterized, including 3 of the 25 in Emerson‘s figure. This is a comparatively rich fauna but is far exceeded by those of the Ethiopian region (approx. 700 species, 79 genera), Neotropical region (approx. 500 species, 56 genera) and Indo-Malayan region (approx. 430 species, 46 genera).

Human Ecology in Australia,climate, soil, etc. –upon that fairly important biped called “Man”, it is called geography. This latter branch of knowledge is surely an important aspect of Ecology, but I have spent much of my time at such Universities as Sydney and Toronto in the attempt to prove that Geography should be classed with the Sciences rather than with the Humanities.

The Ecology and Biogeography of Australian Grasshoppers and Locusts, of the present contribution is to discuss in a preliminary way the broad features of the ecology and biogeography of the grasshopper and locust fauna as a whole, drawing largely on hitherto unpublished observations of the author. Information on the economic species will be included only to the extent that it contributes to this aim.
