Biodegradability of amphoteric surfactants,s. In acidic solutions they form cations, in alkaline solutions anions and in the mid-pH range ‘zwitterions’, i.e. molecules with two ionic groups with equivalent charges. Molecules to which this principle is applied on the hydrophilic group and which, at the same time, contain a hydrophobic fatty chain are known as amphoteric surfactants.
