Endoplasmic Reticulum, Golgi Complexes and Secretory Vesicles,, liver, collagen-secreting fibroblasts and polymer-secreting plant cells, suggested that they were involved in synthetic and secretory activity. Subsequent investigations brilliantly vindicated these predictions.

Microbodies, before these particles were recognized as a distinct class of subcellular organelle. The name “microbody” was originally used to describe a particle in mammalian liver cells, circular in profile and 0-2–1-5 .m in diameter, with a sparsely granular matrix, and bounded by a single membrane.
