Conductance of low-temperature electrons in such systems will be dominated by electron wave effects. “Quantum wires” are quantum heterostructures where the electron motion is confined primarily to two dimensions. Hundreds of papers in the past decade have discussed the basic and applied physics of quantum heterostructures.

Bound States in Low-Dimensional Systems,this book, the motion of electrons in one dimension is restricted. Frequently the electron motion in one dimension can be confined to a single quantum state, so that the electron behavior in this direction is well understood. In this and similar cases the motion of the particles is well approximated as a quasi-low-dimensional system.
