Nonconformist Histories and the Rise of a Dissenting Narrative Identity,, and the transatlantic networks that supported their construction and circulation, not only defined what it meant to be a Dissenter but also highlighted New England and Scotland’s place in the history of Dissent. As a result, these histories figured centrally in the creation and diffusion of a transatlantic Dissenting narrative identity.

Either independently or in cooperation with other agencies, Dissenters provided books to rural clergy, colleges, and missionaries on the borderlands of the empire. Such efforts required both a strong transatlantic network and reliable provincial agents, like Colman, to direct the exchanges.
