Zoe Learns to Talk, our language is a cultural extension of preexisting interaction patterns. Furthermore, it is plausible to think that in part at least the child’s first steps into language recapitulate those of the species. Self-Consciousness,nsider the ultimate stage of our journey from Eden: We transcend our not quite fully human forbears by becoming self-aware. But now our familiar “what is” question. What is this crucial phenomenon of self-consciousness? And once we understand the idea, can the corresponding thing itself be said to exist?
