Genetics of Temperate Bacteriophages,s a stable relationship with that cell and all its progeny for many generations. The varied ways in which the temperate response can be accomplished are the subject of this chapter. The physical properties of the temperate bacteriophages discussed in this chapter are summarized in Table 6–1.

Transformation, ess is that it manages to occur at all. As anyone who has ever attempted to prepare pure DNA in a laboratory can attest, the world is full of enzymes which readily degrade DNA. Yet somehow these large DNA fragments do manage to survive their journey from cell to cell.

Conjugation, lates of the strain. Yet, by chance, they chose not only one of the few organisms which readily undergoes conjugation but also a fertile strain of that organism. In so doing they started an extremely fruitful branch of bacterial genetic research.

Plasmids Other Than F, 1000 different naturally occurring plasmids, isolated primarily from Gram-negative organisms. . alone is reported to have 269 naturally occurring plasmids. When other bacteria such as the Gram-positive organisms or the cyanobacteria are more fully investigated, the number of plasmids is certain to be increased.

Textbook 19811st editionere other bacteria can better illustrate a particular point. This should not, however, be construed to imply that only E. coli is worthy of study. Rather , it is my hope that students will be able to generalize from the principles presented in this book to the specific bacterial systems which may be of more direct interest to them.
