Collisions Between Charged Particles and Highly Excited Atoms,Atoms in states of low excitation have radii of order .. = 1 bohr, ionization energies of order 1 rydberg (Ry), and charged particle cross sections of order π... Optically allowed radiative transitions from these states are faster than the corresponding transitions produced by collisions in most astrophysical environments.

Proton Impact Excitation of Positive Ions,re largely determined by electron impact processes. There are, however, particular instances where transitions are caused preferentially by proton impacts. In addition to modifying the plasma characteristics, such transitions have a special utility as diagnostic probes of the proton component of the plasma.
