影响因子As human populations expand and have increasing access to technol ogy, two general environmental concerns have arisen. First, human pop ulations are having increasing impact on the earth system, such that we are altering the biospheric carbon pools, basic processes of elemental cycling and the climate system of the earth. Because of time lags and feedbacks, these processes are not easily reversed. These alterations are occurring now more rapidly than at any time in the last several million years. Secondly, human activities are causing changes in the earth‘s biota that lead to species extinctions at a rate and magnitude rivaling those of past geologic extinction events. Although environmental change is potentially reversible at some time scales, the loss of species is irrevo cable. Changes in diversity at other scales are also cause for concern. Habitat fragmentation and declines in population sizes alter genetic di versity. Loss or introduction of new functional groups, such as nitro gen fixers or rodents onto islands can strongly alter ecosystem processes. Changes in landscape diversity through habitat modification and frag mentation alter the nature of processes within and

Patterns and Current Changes in Alpine Plant DiversityGlobal warming, resulting from increased concentrations of greenhouse gases, may affect ecosystems in different ways and to various extents (Emanuel et al. 1985; Bolin et al. 1986; Solomon and Shugart 1993, etc.). Coral reefs, mangroves, the arctic tundra, and high mountain ecosystems are particularly vulnerable (Markham et al. 1993).

Questions of the functional significance of diversity, and indeed whether species diversity alone has any functional significance, are also abundant (e.g. Hurlbert 1971; May 1973; Schulze and Mooney 1993). The taxonomic and genetic diversity within a community, the diversity among

As studies in biogeography and physiological, population, community and ecosystem ecology typically ignore this level of variation, much less is known about within-species diversity than diversity of species in arctic and alpine (as well as other) c

We will discuss the relationships of the various mountain floras and their diversity, how these floras developed and to which extent migration of plant species contributed to diversity. We will also investigate the tectonic history and more recent

Basic Probabilities. Discrete Spacestwo important borders for animal life in the high alpine environment: the timberline and the snow line. Above the timberline at ca 2000 m vegetation changes from dwarf shrub heath to steppe-like grasslands (sedge mats) of (1) the alpine zone (ca. 2000–2700 m), which gradually fade into the grassland

Arctic tundra has been particularly affected because large temperature fluctuations and the growth of continental ice sheets have extensively altered vegetati
