Experimental Archaeometallurgy, vailable environment, materials and technologies. This chapter reviews a wide range of experimental projects in Europe, Asia, Africa, Mesoamerica and South America. These encompass the metallurgical cycle from the mining, processing and smelting of ores to the casting, working and use of objects.

Chemical and Isotopic Studies of Ancient Metals,f such analyses, especially as they relate to attempts to assign “provenance” to ancient artifacts, are discussed. In general, the chemical and isotopic analysis of metal artifacts as well as metallurgical artifacts (e.g., crucibles and slags) is essential for reconstructing the ancient technological process.

Ethnoarchaeological and Historical Methods, tain alloys in South and Central America are provided here to demonstrate the range of interpretive contributions of ethnoarchaeological and ethnohistorical studies. The authors then conclude with thoughts on future directions and emphases concerning the ethnoarchaeology of metallurgical technologies.
