Archaeological Value of BeadsAs Sir Flinders Petrie remarked in his Handbook of Egyptian Antiquities, beads with pottery constitute the alphabet of archaeological research. The importance of beads as archaeological evidence arises from their being so common and at the same time so multifarious as to make them especially useful for dating.

A New ClassificationWhile the principle of classification set out in the last chapter seems to be fairly sound, the detailed scheme given here is just a tentative proposal to show how the principal can be put into practice. This detailed scheme is not pretended to be perfect and final and is certainly capable of being improved or modified by later discoveries.
