Jochen Stutz,Kam Weng Wong,Catalina Tsaiunched a long-term field study on snowshoe hare (.) populations near Rochester, Alberta. A number of important papers from this study have appeared since then, including the monograph (Keith and Windberg, 1978) that provides a nearly complete 15-year set of demographic data. I shall call this work ‘the Rochester study’.

Regine Eibl,Sören Werner,Dieter Eiblods and discuss their merits and limitations. Many observed population time series may not be long enough to apply the statistical methods introduced here. Nonetheless, learning the methods will enrich perception of animal population dynamics.

Basic properties and structure of population processesarticular intention here is to deduce what conditions are required for a given population to be regulated so as to persist. In deducing such conditions, we shall gain insight into the basic properties and structure of animal population processes. The practical value of our deduction depends, of course, on how we set up the premises.

Population process modelspter, I shall discuss several types of mechanisms and examine their interrelations. Through such comparative studies, we gain insight into the way our ideas evolve. Understanding the ecological meaning of a model promotes further improvement in its applicability through systematic generalizations.
