Theory of Mass Oscillation,The theory of the oscillation of the whole body of water in the pipeline and surge tank is based upon three fundamental equations: the dynamic equation, the equation of continuity and an equation giving the upward velocity of the water surface in the surge tank.

Finite Difference Methods II,In Chapter 11 we saw how various finite difference methods may be applied to the mass oscillations which follow sudden complete valve closure in a straightforward cylindrical tank with or without a throttle. The same methods—Pressel, Simple Arithmetic, Jakobsen and Escande—can be used for more complex cases.
