影响因子An up-to-date basic introduction to the blood-brain barrier which starts with a clear description of the key historical experiments which have led to the concept of this multi-faceted barrier mechanism. There are sections on the morphology of the barrier, basic transport kinetics and carrier-meditated processes. Subsequent chapters deal with transport of glucose and amino-acids, peptides and nucleotides. The final chapter reviews various models of neurological disorders which can be used to unravel the complexity of the barrier in health and disease.

Thus Ehrlich observed that many dyes, after intravenous injection, stained the tissues of practically the whole body, while the brain was spared. Thus, the continuous metabolism of glucose must be adequately maintained by a continuous supply of the metabolite from the blood. Sugars, like amino acids, are highly water-soluble, and, being relatively large molecules, th

Der überlastete und passive Wohlfahrtsstaatt may be related to a disturbance of the barrier. The prerequisite for studies on barrier dysfunction is the establishment of suitable experimental animal models. Many, but far from all, models in experimental medicine are homologous, i.e. there is a correspondence in the aetiology of the disease an

Finally, the model may have no resemblance to the disease but simply be a non-homologous or non-isomorphic representation that has value in either reflecting some aspects of the disease or for studying the therapy used for treating the disease.
