The Remaking of Anglo-Afghan Relations,tions’ argues that independence was an international question that required empire from whose dependence it had sprung, in terms of political recognition as well as ontological reasoning. 1919 brought independence, but it did not spell the end of empire. The British Legation in Kabul materialised diplomatic inequality.
