https://doi.org/10.1007/978-1-0716-2039-7tive immunoreactivity was found in the brain and gut of ., and in the CNS and the peripheral nerve net of the cestodes. We suggest that the brain-gut peptides of free-living flatworms act on the subtegumental region in the cestodes, which lack a gut but absorb their nutrients directly through the tegument.

https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-72185-9f larval eyes was a particularly useful character in revealing mosaicism. This study establishes the polyclad embryo as determinative, but with important cell interactions also occurring during early development, and provides evidence that mosaicism became associated with spiral cleavage in the quartet form during the evolution of the Turbellaria.

Jerry J. Sweet,Cynthia Westergaardere are a few groups that also are archaic in some few features (above all, the Catenulida), although on the whole they are more advanced than the Acoela. The Turbellaria as a whole is notable for its morphological diversity in comparison with other classes of the Scolecida.

On the evolution of central nervous systems: Implications from polyclad turbellarian neurobiologybrain’s main functions are the coordination and sequencing of peripherally placed reflexes. Even at this stage, however, the brain already contains cells that seem as advanced as those found in higher organisms.

Comparative characterization of the nervous system of the Turbellariat of the nervous system in Müller’s larvae of polyclads shows it is of an orthogonal type comparable to other platyhelminths. Transition to parasitism is accompanied by some progressive transformations in the structure of the nervous system.
