J. David Barrans,Choong-Chin Liew dynamics and evolution. Because change is an inherent property of ecological systems, the capacity of urban ecosystems to respond and adapt to these changes is an important factor in making cities sustainable over the long term (Alberti and Marzluff 2004).

But to fully understand the interactions between urban ecosystems and the relationships between urban planning and ecology (Alberti et al. 2003).

Werner Budts,Alexandra Frogoudakithese interactions lead to emergent patterns that cannot be predicted from an understanding of the behavior of the individual parts. The evolution of such landscapes is in itself an emergent property. Furthermore, uncertainty is important, since any change that departs from past trends can affect the trajectories of landscape dynamics.

To make sound decisions, it is crucial to assess the effectiveness of infrastructure choices and the robustness of urban planning strategies under alternative future scenarios.

Urban Patterns and Ecosystem Function, uch as energy flows, nutrient cycling, and primary production. Landscape heterogeneity manifests as discrete patterns and gradients across multiple spatial scales, and it matters to populations, communities, and ecosystems.
