Spatial Chaos in Boundary Layer Transitione! the spatial evolution of disturbances. These maps are consistent with classical linear stability theory for small disturbances, and give rise to ‘Smale horse-shoe’ like behaviour for larger amplitude disturbances. Thus a mechanism for generating chaos has been uncovered.

Results are presented for Prandtl number 6.8 and aspect ratio Γ ≡ . equal to 2.5 as a function of the rotation rate. For rigid insulating sidewalls, and rigid thermally conducting top and bottom lids, the results agree well with those mesured experimentally.
