In the search for best managementalternatives, practice has undergone a pendulum swing between stagesthat can be characterised as frontier economics, radicalenvironmentalism, resource management/allocation, selectiveenvironmentalism and sustainable environmental management. The nextstage of management must answer such questions as: `Can there be aglobal - uniform environmental strategy?‘, or `Based on theircharacteristics, can different issues, different regions and differentapplications have unique environmental strategies?‘ Based on thispremise, the next stage of management may be identified as risk basedsustainable environmental management. The goal of this style will bethe risk based, long term, harmonious management of economic resourcesand environmental preservation for health, safety and prosperity ofsustainable populations.
