It contains a detailed look at the interaction of the different models used in chaos theory and analyses how these models influence the way chaos is defined. Furthermore, the book discusses the conditions for the occurrence of chaos and the detection of chaos in nature. . | Pindex | Book 2017 |

,Introduction, |
Lena C. Zuchowski |
|
Abstract
The book’s strategy and content will be introduced. Over the last 40 years, chaos theory has had a huge impact on science and philosophy. This is evidenced by the astonishing volume of chaos-related publications; even a cursory survey shows that chaos has been detected virtually everywhere, from cardiac rhythms to Joyce’s Ulysses (e.g. Kellert, 2008). Given the high export appeal of chaos theory, it is surprising that there are fundamental aspects of the field that still remain poorly understood and, in some cases, permanently debated.

,Vertical and Horizontal Models in Chaos Theory, |
Lena C. Zuchowski |
|
Abstract
I will review material on vertical and horizontal modelling. The vertical and horizontal construction of models in chaos theory will be demonstrated in two case studies: the construction of three models based on the logistic equation and two models based on the Lorenz equations.

,Chaos Criteria and Definitions, |
Lena C. Zuchowski |
|
Abstract
I will maintain that chaos definitions are twofold decomposable into combinations of five core criteria (determinism, transitivity, periodicity, aperiodicity and SDIC) and into different embodiments of these criteria. The different embodiments of each criterion and the relationships between different criteria will be discussed. I will then show that five prevalent definitions of chaos can be analysed in this compositional framework.

,Evaluation of Chaotic Models, |
Lena C. Zuchowski |
|
Abstract
I will introduce an analytic framework that conceptualizes the evaluation of vertical chaotic models as consisting of three steps: the determination of the chaotic conditional to be transferred from a model to a target system; the determination of the existence of chaos in the target system; and the evaluation of model faithfulness. Each step will be discussed in detail. I will also discuss the evaluation and investigative role of horizontal chaotic models.

,Conclusion, |
Lena C. Zuchowski |
|
Abstract
I will provide a summary of the books content. In the three main chapters of this book, I analysed the construction, diagnosis and evaluation of models in chaos theory. Using the method of rational reconstruction, the book aimed to analyse each of the three stages of modelling in detail. To my knowledge, this is the first such modelling-centred analysis of chaos theory.
