A word on critics end, and with the consistency that makes it necessary to include the narrator in our analysis, as well as our own act upon the text. I call it ‘primary’ for not being exhaustive, but also for the fact that it enters the text on its own level.

Analysis of narration, or ction of the narrative as directed at a listener or reader (hence the courtroom analogy above), directed at another which moreover is also the self. Telling his tale is therefore another adventure on which the narrator embarks, of precisely the kind James has described.
