This chapter first introduces various definitions of the word “spinster”, and subsequently delves into the anti-proverbs about spinsters, particularly those analyzing their qualities and behavior.

“Behind Every Man Who Lives Within His Income Is a Wife Who Doesn’t”: The Figure of Wife as Portrayee. Subsequently, the anti-proverbs in the chapter discuss wives’ infidelity, talkativeness, lack of wisdom, and ignorance. Anti-proverbs also portray wives as materialistic, to the point where their greed might even lead to their husbands’ bankruptcy, especially when it comes to buying new clothes.
