描述Wireless personal communications, or wireless as it is now being called, has arrived. The hype is starting to fade, and the hard work of deploying new systems and services for personal communications is underway. In the United States, the FCC propelled the wireless era from infancy to mainstream with a $7.7 billion auction of 60 MHz of radio spectrum in the 180011900 MHz band. With the largest single sale of public property in the history of mankind mostly complete, the resources of the entire world are being called upon to develop inexpensive, rapidly deployable wireless systems and sub­ scriber units for an industry that is adding subscribers at greater than 50% annual rate. This growth is commonplace for wireless service companies throughout the world, and in the U.S., where as many as 7 licensed wireless service providers may be competing for cellularfPCS customers within the next couple of years, differentiators in cost, qual­ ity, service, and coverage will become critical to customer acceptance and use. Many of these issues are discussed in the papers included in this book.

A Wireless Infrastructure to Support Research Activities Outside the wireless LAN service area, we are using the cellular digital packet data (CDPD) service offered by Bell Atlantic Mobile. With both the CDPD and wireless LAN networks operational, properly equipped mobile computers will be able to use both networks.

A CDPD Performance Model for an Intelligent Transportation System Architecture Evaluationthat were run to predict performance for an urban scenario in the year 2012. The results indicate that current CDPD technology can handle the required loads, which are primarily associated with route guidance.

Minimization of Outage Probability in Cellular Communication Systems by Antenna Beam Tilting important especially for interference limited cells. For an antenna height in excess of 50m, missing the optimum tilt angle by 1° leads to an increase in the outage probability by a factor of up to seven.

On the Performance of 4-Phase Sequences in Asynchronous CDMA Systemsymptotically approach lower bounds on maximum cross-correlation. While a probabilistic analysis indicates that the performance of both types of sequences is equal, a deterministic analysis shows that 4-phase sequences indeed offer better average probability of error performance than 2-phase sequences for cases analyzed thus far.
