Air in Motion, have already seen that fluid mechanics teaches the behavior of fluids—liquids and gases—at rest and in motion. Only after mastering these fundamentals, albeit here without the use of higher mathematics, can we begin to understand aerodynamic drag and lift and what makes airplanes fly.

Aerodynamic Lift,Bernoulli’s theorem, and the boundary-layer concept. Along the way we will discover more about vortices and encounter a lawyer’s inspired guess about the nature of lift, arriving finally at a composite picture of what makes flight possible.

Toward High Speed: Supersonic and Hypersonic Flight, The curve is a rough average drawn through points that designate the cruising speed of well-known airliners marked at the time of their initial service. We see, of course, what the experimentalist calls “scatter”—deviations from the mean— because no smooth curve can possibly be expected to apply to such a human endeavor.

than they would in a car? The answer, of course, lies in the wings and the air they are moving through, and the study of the flow of air around airplane wings is part of the science of aerodynamics. This book is about aerodynamics in the broadest sense. In addition to airplanes, it discusses the aer
