Peanut,ion trait with elevated vapor pressure deficit is lost at high temperature. Current studies are underway to identify and use breeding lines expressing sensitivity in stomata closure early in soil drying to achieve varieties producing greater yields under dryland conditions.

Early Partial Stomata Closure with Soil Drying,r contents, defined as fraction transpirable soil water (FTSW). Although early partial closure of stomata is associated with decreased photosynthetic capacity, simulations have shown that the overall benefit of sustained physiological activity with developing drought as a result of this trait is generally expected to allow yield increase.

Sorghum,rghum is grown. Sensitivity to vapor pressure, on the other hand, could result in a high probability of consistent yield increase. Studies with sorghum lines expressing sensitivity of stomata closure to vapor pressure deficit showed linkages to plant hydraulic conductivity and aquaporin expression.

Chickpea,onsequence of greater sensitivity to vapor pressure deficit is the desired shift in water use from early in the growing season to the reproductive stage and an increase in yield. Aquaporin expression appears to be important in the sensitivity to vapor pressure deficit.
