Will the Real Jack Tar Please Stand Up?,ould signal from a watchtower when the great reddish mass appeared offshore.. If this was the face of everyday seafaring, it has serious implications for the social, cultural, and political history of maritime life and labor. We might use a phrase popular at the time and say that these men “used the sea” for a living, but they used it gently.
