Of Sandboxes and Silences,Walter Kohn has been an enormous influence on my professional life. I was one of his later graduate students (PhD, 1989) and managed to create a home for myself in chemistry, by working in density functional theory. A pinnacle of my professional life was, therefore, to spend eight weeks last summer visiting him in Santa Barbara.

Paris Acquaintances,I have known Walter Kohn for about 30 years. I met him for the first time in the house of my close friend André Blandin, who unfortunately died in 1983. I still remember a wonderful summer evening where we had a dinner together in a very nice restaurant outside Paris with a splendid view of the city.
