Free-standing walls, wall’s purpose has been to divide space, control movement and to obstruct vision, thus giving privacy. In some cases walls are built to provide shelter from wind. They may also have a structural purpose in retaining earth or water at different levels.

The use of concrete,special purposes, such as protection from radiation, shielding densities of up to 4000 kg/m. can be achieved by using metallic iron or lead aggregates. Compressive strengths vary with the densities from approximately 0.48 N/mm. up to 69 N/mm. as do the thermal conductivities, from 0.11 to 2.6 W/m degC.
