In contrast, economic systems never mature and stabilize. They remain perpetually in the growth mode until they crash. Farmers have one foot in each system.

As temperatures fell during the Quaternary, energy available during the growing season decreased and species diversity did also because there was not enough energy to support long food chains and elaborate food webs. At low latitudes however, energy supply remained adequate to support high diversity.
