Book 2010ells are the result of the endosymbiotic union of prokaryotic ancestors as well as diverse exosymbiotic associations. This cooperative aggregation appears more successful than its independent parts. This new book presents functional and evolutionary aspects of mutually beneficial symbioses among unrelated organisms.

The denomination “cyanelle,” though incorrect, is kept for historical reasons.

Multibiont Symbioses in the Coral Reef Ecosystemct that de Bary was engaged in research of the mutualistic relationship between algae and fungi in lichens (Castro, 1988). Much of the literature on symbiosis presupposes that the associations are mutualistic, but this view is not fully supported by direct experimental study (Douglas, 1995).

Evolution and Consequences of Nutrition-Based Symbioses in Insects: More than Food Stressat specific nutrients lacking from an insect’s diet can be complemented by microbial symbionts. Alleviation of nutritional stress has evolutionary consequences for both partners in these associations that may extend far beyond the nutritional level.

On the Origin of Symbiosis struggle for existence in evolutionary biology. While many microbiologists focused on the pathogenic effects of infectious germs in animals from the perspective of medicine, botanists examined the morphological and beneficial effects of intimate microbe–plant relationships from an evolutionary pers

Symbioses and Stressbe successful, organisms in association need to resolve these differences and to account for situations of stress experienced by the symbiotic partners. In the following, we will review aspects of symbiosis and stress from several perspectives and elaborate on some general patterns.

Problems and Progress in Understanding the Origins of Mitochondria and Plastids biological, and, most recently, molecular sequence data has been brought to bear on this important issue, and it has now been definitively shown that these organelles are of prokaryotic ancestry. Nevertheless, many important questions about mitochondrial and plastid evolution remain unanswered, par

Low CO2 Stress: Glaucocystophytes May Have Found a Unique Solutiononsidered to be the most ancient phototrophic eukaryotes known to date and can be assigned the status of “living fossils” (Löffelhardt and Bohnert, 2002). The plastids of the archaeplastida, i.e., the cyanelles, the rhodoplasts of red algae, and the chloroplasts of green algae and higher plants, are
