The temperate-tropical gradient of planktonic Protozoa and Rotiferaics are governed largely by temperature and salinity. A study of the altitudinal distribution of rotifers in Africa reveals an interplay between latitude and altitude in determining the similarities of the associations to those found in the temperate Old World.

On the diversity of the Cladocera in the tropicsom the tropics, but is replaced by more Sidids, Moinids, and Bosminids, such that the average cladoceran community in the limnetic zone of a tropical lake is not characterized by less species but rather by lower population densities. This, in turn, is considered a consequence of higher prevalent predation levels in the tropics.

Temperature-related distributions of , and , (Copepoda: Calanoida), particularly in southern Africa for African waters to predict water temperature from latitude and altitude, it is shown that the two genera tend to separate around the 20 °C mean annual temperature isotherm. Additional factors influencing distribution (habitat permanence, water quality, competition and predation) are discussed.

Changes in relative abundance of zooplankton in northern Lake Victoria, East Africa proportions of the main zooplanktonic groups from three sources revealed remarkable changes in community structure since 1931. These changes are discussed with respect to predation, eutrophication and other changes in the food web structure of the lake.
